FIELD NOTE / 03 — LEARNING / SAHIL TAYAL

Education is not a scoreboard

A ranking can answer who performed better on a particular measure. It cannot answer what a person is worth, how fully they can learn, or what the learning is ultimately for.

AN ORIGINAL SAHILVERSE.FIELD NOTEOCTOBER 2026

Schools need measurements. Without evidence of learning, it becomes difficult to know what is working or where students need help. But measurements are answers to specific questions, not universal verdicts. An examination may reward recall or performance under time pressure. It does not by itself measure imagination, ethical judgement, kindness, the ability to collaborate or the capacity to begin again.

A scoreboard becomes dangerous when it quietly takes over the job of a philosophy. We stop asking what education should make possible and start treating the number as the purpose. The result is a strange inversion: the instrument created to serve learning begins to define learning.

This carries into professional life. An organisation can hire for credentials and still fail to develop people. It can publish impressive productivity dashboards and still create an environment where employees are reluctant to ask basic questions. Numbers remain useful, but their meaning depends on what they leave out.

✳

Human capital is an economic phrase for the skills, knowledge and capacities people develop. It becomes more interesting when we remember that the humans involved are not merely units of output. A person who learns to reason clearly, communicate honestly or participate in collective decisions acquires value that does not fit neatly into a quarterly report.

None of this requires pretending credentials are meaningless or that every form of evaluation is oppressive. Good measurement helps us improve. The important distinction is between using evaluation as feedback and using it as destiny.

If an educational system is doing its job, more people should leave it better equipped to understand the world, question what they encounter and contribute with dignity. Ranking may appear somewhere in that story. It should not be the entire plot.
