The argument for scent

Not every difficult idea can be improved by another paragraph. Sometimes a creative experiment needs a different medium altogether.

AN ORIGINAL SAHILVERSE.FIELD NOTEOCTOBER 2026

Scent is unusually hard to capture in language. We borrow other senses to describe it: bright citrus, warm woods, sharp greens, soft musk. Some words refer to materials; others refer to moods or imagined places. The vocabulary is imperfect, and that is part of its charm.

Perfume can be a craft, a commercial product, a social signal or a personal ritual. It can also be a question asked through materials. What does confidence smell like? There is no scientifically established formula for confidence in a bottle. But answering creatively can reveal how people associate textures, memories and cultural cues with an emotional idea.

This makes the boundary between metaphor and evidence especially important. A fragrance can be designed to suggest calm; that does not make it a treatment. A name can evoke courage; that does not mean a molecule contains bravery. The artistic claim and the medical claim are different species. Only one belongs in an imaginative perfume brief.

✳

The sensory world has something to teach a culture obsessed with explanation. We often assume that if we can describe a thing precisely, we have fully understood it. Yet experiences resist complete translation. A familiar smell can produce a feeling before a sentence arrives to name it. The effect may be personal and contingent, but it is not therefore uninteresting.

The practical side of perfumery adds its own discipline: materials, concentrations, stability, safety and the patience to revise a formula. Imagination alone does not produce a well-made fragrance. Craft asks the same question that good writing and good technology ask: does the finished thing deserve someone else’s attention?

A universe of ideas should have room for things that cannot be ranked as arguments. Sometimes the most honest way to explore an emotion is to make something, experience it and see what conversation follows.
